On the 1911c James is living Mayfield's Buildings, St. George's with his widowed mother and working as a 'cellarman in a wine company'. On 7 April 1917 James was in trenches south of Beaurains and was probably part of one of the three platoons ordered to attack Neuville Mill during the night but was were repelled by machine gun fire. |

France. Charles was born on 7 February 1880 to Cornelius & Mary Ambler. In 1901 he married Lydia Long and they went on to have 4 sons. On the 1911c Charles is living with his family in Mayfield's Buildings, St George's and is working as a dockside labourer. Charles' parents, Cornelius 69 & Mary 68, are living nearby in Bostock Street. Service Record: Charles' enlisted November 1915 aged 35yrs 9months and gave his occupation as dock labourer. He was 5f5. 6in. tall. At the beginning of November, Charles' Battalion was near Estaimpuis in Belgium. Charles was admitted to hospital on 15.11.1918 suffering from influenza and chronic pneumonia. |

HMS Raglan sailed for the Dardenelles in June 1915 but on 20 January 1918 she was attacked by Turkish forces and sunk during the Battle of Imbros (Eastern Med) |

In 1915 he married Alice Foster at St. George's and they lived in Star & Garter Yard. Service Record: George enlisted on 25 January 1915 with RHA, then joined the Essex Regt. and finally the London Regiment. He entered the Balkans on 2 Sept. 1915, was wounded on 5.12.1915 and returned to England and admitted on 6.12.1915 to the Welsh Metropolitan Hospital near Cardiff suffering from a ?bullet head wound? He was given 10 days leave to go home on ?20.3.1916 but was then sent to France on 15 June 1916. |

On the 1911c Richard is living Wright's Row, Pell Street with his parents and is working in a 'soaps work'. Service Record: Richard enlisted on 4 Sept. 1914, entering theatre on 7 April 1915. He was wounded on 7 October 1915 and admitted to No. 43 General Hospital where he died. |

Killed in action. Daniel was born 22 November 1891 in St. George's. Daniel enlisted into the RN on 25 May 1910 giving his occupation as brewer's labourer. On the 1911c Daniel is serving as a Stoker aboard HMS Test. On 21 April 1917 HMS Broke, a Faulknor-class destroyer, was severely damaged during the Battle of Dover Strait when German destroyers attacked the Dover barrage and Calais. HMS Broke tried to ram and torpedo the enemy and in doing so the ships locked together the Broke's crew had to fight the enemy hand-to-hand. After getting clear, Broke, which was severely damaged, tried to limp eastward again encounerng the enemy. Fellow destroyers arriving from Dover towed Broke back into Dover. |

Alfred may have been mortally wounded during the Cambrai Operations either during the Phase known as the Tank attack (20-21 Nov) or the Phase: the capture of Bourlon Wood from 23–28 November 1917. |

Charles' Battalion suffered huge casualties from both heavy fire and enemy aircraft |

Albert attended Betts Street School. Albert's Service record has survived but is difficult to read. It looks like he was reported missing on 16 August, was wounded but died when the ambulance he was in was blown up. 16 August was the first day of the Battle of Langemarck; the 9th Bn. attacked at 4:45am, 'A' and 'C' Companies suffered heavy casualties before they had advanced 200yds. |

War Diary states that they landed in Havre on 9 November, before entraining for St. Omer where they billeted for the night. From 17 November until he died on 27 November he was in trenches at Champigny near Estaires. |

HMS Carron was built in 1906 as a merchant vessel and converted to an armed boarding steam for the purpose of enfocing the naval bloackade. |

In 1911 he married Rose Buckwell; on the cenus of that year they are living Duckett Street, Mile End and Henry is working as a rag sorter. Henry's parents are in Martha Street, St. George's. At 6pm on 30 July, Henry's Battalion left camp near Ouderdom, SE of Poperinge and moved up to trenches ready for the following days attack. When they advanced at 8:35am on 31st, they came under heavy MG fire. The troops were also fired on by a hostile aeroplane. |

George's twin brother, Sydney, served with South Staffordshire Regt. |

The barrage for the attack commenced at 5:30am and by 6:15am 'C' & 'D' Company had reached their objective. As soon as covering barrage halted they were subject to heavy machine gun fire; the Bn.suffered heavy casualties. |

When the Bn. attacked on 25th it was met with "terrific machine and rifle fire which caused very heavy casualties". |

His parents are living Spencer Street, St. George's. On 3 September, John went 'over the top' at Guillemot; zero hour was 12noon. The Bn. encountered very heavy rifle and machine gun fire. John is mentioned by name in the Casualty List within the Bn. War Diary. |

On 29 September 1917, Thomas was in trenches near Bailleul. Thomas is mentioned by name in the Bn. War Diary; he was killed (together with 2 other ORs) by shell fire and buried by a party of 'D' Coy. the following day. |

On the 1911c William is serving aboard the Boadicea. HMS Cressy was a Cressy-class armoured cruiser built c1900. HMS Cressy was patrolling with two other cruisers when she was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by the German submarine U-9. |

Killed in action. William was born in Aldgate in 1889. In 1913 he married Martha Bradshaw. William served from 8.9.1914 and left England (Avonmouth) on 1 July 1915, sailing via Malta, Alexandria and Lemnos. On 1 August the Bn. embarked for Imbros. On 8 August William was at Sulva Bay and at 9am ordered to attack. They encountered heavy firing by snipers. At 11:30pm orders were received to retire. On 9 August orders were again received to attack; the 'men were at this stage in a state of extreme exhaustion and hunger'. There was lots of 'confusion' and 'orders lost'. The Bn. lost heavily when they came under fire. |

Alfred had served previously, enlisting in 1895. On 18 December 1915 Alfred had gone into the front line at Hooge. On 19 December the enemy began a violent artillery bombardment of the area followed by a gas attack. The bombardment continued until midnight on 20 December. The Bn. War Diary states that Alfred was wounded on 20 December and died the same day. |

Fred initially went to Egypt/Gallipoli on 24.8.1915. He probably left Gallipol in January 1916 and moved to France. The Bn. arrived in the front line on 27 June and over the next few days experienced an enemy barrage, heavy shelling and machine gun fire. On 1 July 1916, Fred was in trenches at Hebuterne and at 7:30am (after putting down a barrage on the enemy) the Bn. began its advance. The Bn. suffered heavily and by the end of the day had lost more than half its Officers and ORS. This event was known as the Battle of Gommecourt. |

Wary diary for August 1918 is not on Ancestry. In January 1918 the Bn. was in the front line at Boesinghe; when Joseph returned from he leave his Bn. had just arrived at Noyon. |

On the 1911c, Henry is living with his wife & 2 daughters at 30 Tillman St, St Georges; they went on to have 2 more children. Henry's parents were nearby in Cable Street. Henry's Service Record states that he enlisted 12.12.1915 and embarked for Basra on 26.5.1917. He was posted to Port Directorate 10 days before his death on 1.3.1918. A court of enquiry was held into his death. There were 4 witnesses. On the day he died Pioneer Sullivan (a stevedore discharging cargo in the port) was posted to H.T. ‘Shansi’ which was discharging coal in the Harbour. The role of the Inland Water Transport section of the RE, was to deliver supplies to the British Army in Mesopotamia (Iraq) who were fighting Turkish Forces. |

He rejoined his unit on 8.2.1917 and was admitted to Hospital/CCS on 2.3.1917 suffering from scabies and then to 45 CCS on 30.3.917 with eczema. On 3.5.1917 he was admitted ot 5th General Hospital at Rousen. |

Charles married Kate Wise in 1911 and they had 2 sons. Charles enlisted 27.2.1899 and left/went into reserves on 26.2.1911. HMS Formidable was stationed at Sheerness, Kent and on 30.12.1915 left to return to Portland to take part in firing exercises. Despite reports of submarine activity, early in the morning of 1st January 1915 whilst in the Channel the ship was sunk after being hit by 2 torpedoes fired by U-24. The crew abandoned ship but only 233 out of 780 survived. |

Charles was admitted to hospital on 15.11.1918 suffering from influenza and chronic pneumonia. |

Killed in action. Daniel was born 22 November 1891 in St. George's. Daniel enlisted into the RN on 25 May 1910 giving his occupation as brewer's labourer. On the 1911c Daniel is serving as a Stoker aboard HMS Test. On 21 April 1917 HMS Broke, a Faulknor-class destroyer, was severely damaged during the Battle of Dover Strait when German destroyers attacked the Dover barrage and Calais. HMS Broke tried to ram and torpedo the enemy and in doing so the ships locked together the Broke's crew had to fight the enemy hand-to-hand. After getting clear, Broke, which was severely damaged, tried to limp eastward again encounerng the enemy. Fellow destroyers arriving from Dover towed Broke back into Dover. |

Received the DCM for conspicuous gallantry and ability on 26 May 1915 at Festubert (Gazetted 5.8.1915). On 7 October 1916, Frederick was in the Flers front line at Eaucourt l'Abbe and his Bn. were ordered to attack the Warlencourt Line. |

Killed in action. Frederick was born c1897 to Richard & Mary Ann Morris. On the 1911c Fred is living ith his widowed mother in Lavender Place, St George. Fred initially went to Egypt/Gallipoli on 24.8.1915. He probably left Gallipol in January 1916 and moved to France. The Bn. arrived in the front line on 27 June and over the next few days experienced an enemy barrage, heavy shelling and machine gun fire. On 1 July 1916, Fred was in trenches at Hebuterne and at 7:30am (after putting down a barrage on the enemy) the Bn. began its advance. The Bn. suffered heavily and by the end of the day had lost more than half its Officers and ORS. This event was known as the Battle of Gommecourt. |

In 1901 Richard married Lily Curtis and went on to have 4 daughters. On the 1911c, Richard is living with Lily in South Grove Buildings, Mile End. Richard arrived in France on 7.4.1915. On 1 July 1916 Richard was in trenches near Millencourt and went over the top with his Bn., which suffered heavy casualties from machine gun fire. Of the 650 NCO and men who took part in the assault a bare 50 answered their names in the early hours of 2nd July. |

On the 1911c, Alfred was living with his parents in Cable Street, St Georges and working as a 'shorthand typist'. Alfred's father was the Verger & Parish Clerk of St. George in the East Church. It's impossible to know when or where Alfred was wounded, but he may have died during an air-raid on St. Omer in May 1918. Alfred's brother, Arthur, also died (27.5.1915). |

On 18 August 1916, Robert was in the trenches at Carnoy, near Albert. At 2:45pm Robert's Battalion attacked MG House and ZZ Trench. The Bn. lost 38 ORs and 297 were wounded. |

He was admitted to Warrington Hospital on 11.7.1916 suffering from a GSW. He was given leave back to England from 29.1.1918-12.2.1918. He was awarded the Military Medal (Gazette 21.10.1918). The Bn. Wary diary for August 1918 is not on Ancestry. In January 1918 the Bn. was in the front line at Boesinghe; when Joseph returned from he leave his Bn. had just arrived at Noyon. |

accidentally drowned Henry was born in St. George's in c1886 to John & Elizabeth Sullivan. In 1908 Henry married Jessie Atkinson. On the 1911c, Henry is living with his wife & 2 daughters at 30 Tillman St, St Georges; they went on to have 2 more children. Henry's parents were nearby in Cable Street. Henry's Service Record states that he enlisted 12.12.1915 and embarked for Basra on 26.5.1917. He was posted to Port Directorate 10 days before his death on 1.3.1918. A court of enquiry was held into his death. There were 4 witnesses. On the day he died Pioneer Sullivan (a stevedore discharging cargo in the port) was posted to H.T. ‘Shansi’ which was discharging coal in the Harbour. The role of the Inland Water Transport section of the RE, was to deliver supplies to the British Army in Mesopotamia (Iraq) who were fighting Turkish Forces. |

He enlisted on 2.2.1916 at Lismore, New South Wales aged 21 using the name Alfred Syrett (his mother's maiden name). He gave his occupation as 'diary farmer'. He was wounded (GSW) on 5.11.1916 and admitted to 45 CCS before transferring to No. 22 General Hospital at Camiers, then transferred to England on 11.11.1916. He rejoined his unit on 8.2.1917 and was admitted to Hospital/CCS on 2.3.1917 suffering from scabies and then to 45 CCS on 30.3.917 with eczema. On 3.5.1917 he was admitted ot 5th General Hospital at Rousen. |

Chatham Memorial | Killed in action. Charles was born in Whitechapel on 8 July 1880 to Henry & Caroline Watkins. Charles' father died when he was 10yrs old. Charles married Kate Wise in 1911 and they had 2 sons. Charles enlisted 27.2.1899 and left/went into reserves on 26.2.1911. HMS Formidable was stationed at Sheerness, Kent and on 30.12.1915 left to return to Portland to take part in firing exercises. Despite reports of submarine activity, early in the morning of 1st January 1915 whilst in the Channel the ship was sunk after being hit by 2 torpedoes fired by U-24. The crew abandoned ship but only 233 out of 780 survived. |
